The comfort and well-being of our patients is a high priority. Our team understands that negative associations with dental treatment, dental phobia, and low pain thresholds greatly impact the experiences of patients in oral healthcare settings. Sedation dentistry is beneficial for fearful patients or those receiving more invasive treatments. Some sedation methods can help amplify the analgesic properties of local anesthetics to increase a person’s level of comfort. If you have difficulty sitting through dental treatment or if you have an upcoming dental procedure where you believe you might benefit from sedation, bring this up with our team. We are happy to accommodate all our guests.

A Calm Mind

Do you fear dental treatment? Does the thought of visiting a dental office give you feelings of panic and worry? You’re not alone. Millions of people suffer from episodes of debilitating anxiety in the United States. Unfortunately, many people with severe dental anxiety tend to skip routine dental appointments or even forego necessary care out of fear. Sedation dentistry is a big benefit to those with dental anxieties. This is because sedation calms the body and mind. Even those with severe anxiety might catch themselves dozing off in one of our examination chairs.

Increased Comfort

Sometimes sedation is beneficial to increase one’s comfort during a procedure. It is also useful for those who have trouble sitting still during lengthier treatments. Oral sedation is a safe effective way to make your dental visits more relaxing and comfortable.

Types of Sedation

Our practice offers oral sedation. This type of sedation involves patients taking prescribed medication prior to their appointments. The medication prescribed normally comes from the benzodiazepine family of drugs. The medications that we use are safe and produce a relaxing, calming effect.  Many patients even dose off during treatment.

If you are interested in sedation dentistry for your upcoming treatments, let a member of our staff know so that you can speak to our dentist about your concerns.  We monitor vital signs for patient safety and take biannual classes to stay current.

Sedation Dentistry FAQs

Is sedation dentistry covered by medical insurance?

Sedation dentistry is not typically covered by medical or dental insurance. Most insurance carriers view sedation dentistry services as a luxury and not a necessity for treatment. Fortunately, fees for oral sedation are affordable – especially if one considers the potential benefits of increased comfort in the dental chair.

If you have questions about your dental insurance coverage, be sure to call and speak with a representative from your insurer.

How long does it take to recover from sedation dentistry?

Oral sedation, on the other hand, does take some time to wear off because the medications prescribed stay in your blood stream. While a person is awake with this medication, motor function is impaired. Those receiving oral sedation should arrange for transportation to and from their appointments and avoid driving and working for 24 hours.
